Itchy skin is a common challenge in our dry climate, especially as we age. Often, this is caused by a lack of moisture in the outer layer of the skin. Moisturizing regularly may help relieve itching.
Please note: this routine can be very intimidating, and depending on the severity of your case, it may not be required to do all of this routine. If you have questions, please call Aspire Care Clinic or contact your family physician about the details of this routine.
1) When you are bathing (Daily):
a. Bathtub: Fill tub with lukewarm water, adding at least one capful of Emulsified Oil to your bath water.
b. Shower: apply Emulsified oil directly to your skin and then do a quick rinse, the oil will penetrate into your skin. Recommended Oils: Rexall Moisturizing Bath and Shower Oil, Aveeno Oil, Keri Oil.
2) Pat yourself dry, and apply a medicated cream (if prescribed) to the affected areas. This should be done in the morning and evening. Once the itch/rash is gone, skip this step.
3) Apply a moisturizing cream over the medicated cream (if you are using), or directly on the skin. Again this should be done in the morning and evening.
a. Do not use lotions! These regularly come in pumps, but contain too much water.
b. Recommended moisturizers: Aspire Care Clinic Hydrocare, Vaseline Problem Skin Therapy, Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream, Aveeno Eczema Care Balm, Glaxal Base Moisturizing Cream, CeraVe Renewing SA Cream, Eucerin Complete Repair Cream, Lipikar Baume (pump).
Do NOT scratch! This will irritate the rash and cause a flare up. Apply ice-packs, or store your moisturizing cream in the fridge and apply it when you are itchy. For night- time convenience, you can also place your ice-pack in your cooler with the moisturizer and apply it at night when you are itchy.
