Hyperpigmentation can present as flat, darkened patches of skin varying in size and color. Pigment spots such as age spots (which are also known as sun spots) are caused by sun exposure. For this reason, they appear mainly on body parts that are frequently exposed such as the face, neck, décolleté, hands, and arms.
Melasma is a very common condition of brown discoloration on sun exposed areas of the face, commonly the cheeks, upper lip, and forehead. Melasma typically worsens with sun exposure, birth control pills, and hormones of pregnancy.
Melasma usually becomes more noticeable in the summer and improves during the winter months.
