Hand and Foot Care

Psoriasis, dermatitis, and other hand and foot problems are dome of the most difficult types of skin conditions to treat. Moisturizing regularly, with the addition of a “barrier cream” is an important part of keeping skin health and relieving of itch.

1. Soak your hands in an emulsified oil and lukewarm water. We recommend about 15 min, and pat dry. Apply 2 capfuls to 500mlL of warm water in basin.

   a) Recommended Oils: – Rexall Moisturizing Bath and Shower Oil – Aveeno Oil – Keri Oil

   b) Your oil should turn creamy white when it hits the water. Other oils just sit on the surface of the water.

2. Apply a moisturizing cream directly in the skin. for the hands and feet, we strongly recommend adding a barrier cream over the moisturizing cream. Again this should be done in the morning and evening.

   a) Do not use lotions! These come in pumps, but contain too much water.

   b) Recommended barrier creams:

      – Cicalfate Barrier Cream

     – Cetaphil Barier Cream

   c) Recommended moisturizer creams:

     – Aspire Care Clinic Hydrocare

     – Eucerin Aquaphor Healing Ointment

     – Uremol (10% or 20%)

     – Lipikar Xerand Hand Repair Cream

     – Lipikar Eczema Cream

     – Gold Bond Eczema Relief

   d) Apply barrier cream after you wash your hands, several times daily up to 10-15 times/day when your hands/feet are extremely dry, cracked, and sore.

3. Wear cotton gloves over your cream when you are relaxing at home, or sleeping in bed. a) Cotton gloves can be found at most pharmacies, the dollar store, or Amazon.

4. If you are cleaning, washing dishes, or working with chemicals, wear cotton gloves inside plastic or rubber gloves. Running water can be very drying to the skin.

Do not scratch! This will irritate the rash and flare it up. Apply ice-packs, or put your moisturizing cream in the fridge so it gets cold and apply it when you are itchy.

Without a good moisturizer, water is an irritant! Therefore, it is critical to try and moisturizer your hands after washing them.
